INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH OCCUPATIONS            
Grades:             10        
Prerequisite:      None

This course serves as an introduction to the Health Occupations career/technical program and is designed to be offered during the student’s sophomore year in high school.  The course provides an introduction to the major course content of the junior and senior years of the program.  Individual units will be presented in introduction to healthcare as a profession, medical terminology, body systems in relation to medical terminology, infection control practices, recognition of illness, math applications in healthcare, and introduction to basic patient care skills. Throughout the course, students will be expected to apply reading and writing skills, basic math skills, and professional communication skills.  This course will fulfill one-half elective credit needed for graduation.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS I      
Grades:             11
Prerequisite:      Grade 10, a desire to help others, a reading and math stanine of at least 5, and strong math,                         reading and science skills
Credits:             3
This three period course consists of the Certified Nursing Assistant Program combined with hospital learning at an acute care facility, and anatomy and physiology. The students who successfully complete this program are eligible to sit the Board of Nursing exam for Certified Nurse Assistant. Content of the class includes continuation of medical terminology, which is completed in the senior year. Content includes psychosocial and cultural needs of the client, patient care skills, infection control, communication skills, and legal and ethical responsibility The student will obtain a two-year certification in CPR with brief instruction in First Aid and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Students must provide solid colored scrub clothing for classroom wear with a set of white scrubs for clinical practice, white tennis shoes, a wrist watch with a second hand, and a name badge. Upon successful completion of this course, the student is eligible for Tech Prep credit with the Community College of Southern Nevada.  Lab fees for this class cover the use and replacement of equipment and supplies for the clinical practice lab.

MEDICAL OFFICE PRACTICES
Grade:              12
Prerequisite:      Health Occupations I
Credits:             3
This three period course is designed for students who have successfully completed the junior Health Occupations class to continue their learning of entry level skills in a healthcare related field. This course meets the National Skills Standards for Health Occupations. The first semester includes completion of Medical Terminology, Medical Front Office and Back Office skills. Front office skills include communication, file management, computer techniques, and insurance billing. Back office skills include assessment and management of the client with physician oversight. Second semester students may select a work practice site, or remain in class. Classroom content will include care of the geriatric client, and childcare and child development. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible for Tech Prep credit with the Community College of Southern Nevada. Fees for this course include equipment, supplies and workbook.
